Eye care frequently asked questions |

Question 1

What is the difference between an ophthalmologist and an optometrist?

Accepted Answer

An ophthalmologist is a medical eye doctor who diagnoses eye disease and performs eye surgery. An optometrist tests vision and prescribes glasses and contact lenses, and can manage some eye conditions. At Amanat Eye Hospital, ophthalmology and optometry work together so a comprehensive eye exam, a prescription, and surgical care can be planned in one place.

Question 2

When should I see an eye doctor?

Accepted Answer

See an eye doctor for blurred vision, eye pain, redness, flashes, new floaters, double vision, or any sudden change in sight. Regular eye exams also matter when you feel fine, because glaucoma and diabetic eye disease can be silent. Book an ophthalmology consultation at Amanat Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Lahore, or Peshawar.

Question 3

What causes blurry vision?

Accepted Answer

Blurry vision can come from a changed glasses prescription, dry eye, cataract, corneal disease, retinal disease, or high blood sugar. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A visual acuity test and a dilated eye exam at Amanat Eye Hospital can show whether the blur is a focusing problem or eye disease.

Question 4

What is vision impairment?

Accepted Answer

Vision impairment means sight is reduced enough to affect daily tasks and is not fully corrected by glasses or contact lenses. It can range from mild low vision to severe sight loss. Treating the underlying eye disease, then using low-vision support, helps many people. Amanat Eye Hospital can examine the cause of reduced vision.

Question 5

What happens during a comprehensive eye exam?

Accepted Answer

A comprehensive eye exam checks visual acuity, refraction, eye pressure, the front of the eye, and the retina and optic nerve. Extra tests may include OCT, visual fields, or corneal topography. It is the right visit for glasses, contact lenses, and screening for silent eye disease. You can book this exam at Amanat Eye Hospital.

Question 6

What is intraocular pressure?

Accepted Answer

Intraocular pressure, or IOP, is the fluid pressure inside the eye. It is measured with tonometry during an eye exam. A common reference range is about 10 to 21 mmHg, but one reading does not confirm or rule out glaucoma. Amanat Eye Hospital checks eye pressure during glaucoma screening and follow-up.

Question 7

What does high eye pressure mean?

Accepted Answer

High eye pressure means IOP is above the usual range and can raise the risk of optic nerve damage. Some people have high pressure without glaucoma, and some have glaucoma with normal pressure. Optic nerve examination, OCT, and visual field testing are needed. Glaucoma specialists at Amanat Eye Hospital interpret these results together.

Question 8

What is the optic nerve?

Accepted Answer

The optic nerve carries visual signals from the retina to the brain. Damage can cause permanent blind spots or loss of side vision. Glaucoma is the most common disease that injures it. Early optic nerve checks at Amanat Eye Hospital help protect sight before symptoms start.

Question 9

Can a damaged optic nerve be repaired?

Accepted Answer

A damaged optic nerve cannot currently be restored to normal. Treatment aims to stop further loss, most often by lowering intraocular pressure in glaucoma. That is why early detection matters. If you have optic nerve damage, an ophthalmologist at Amanat Eye Hospital can review the cause and a plan to preserve remaining vision.

Question 10

What does the retina do?

Accepted Answer

The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It turns light into signals that the optic nerve sends to the brain. Diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal tears, and retinal detachment all affect it. Retina assessment is available through Amanat Eye Hospital’s retina service.

Question 11

What is the cornea?

Accepted Answer

The cornea is the clear dome at the front of the eye and does most of the eye’s focusing. The lens then fine-tunes the focus. Scars, infection, swelling, or keratoconus can blur vision even with new glasses. Slit-lamp corneal examination is part of eye care at Amanat Eye Hospital.

Question 12

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

Accepted Answer

A cataract is clouding of the natural lens. Common symptoms are cloudy or dim vision, glare while driving at night, halos, faded colors, and frequent glasses changes. Cataracts usually grow slowly and are not an emergency. Cataract surgeons at Amanat Eye Hospital can confirm the diagnosis and discuss when surgery will help.

Question 13

Is cataract surgery painful?

Accepted Answer

Modern cataract surgery is usually not painful because the eye is numbed with drops or local anesthesia. You may feel light pressure or see light during the procedure, and most people go home the same day. Your surgeon at Amanat Eye Hospital will explain anesthesia, intraocular lens choice, and eye-drop aftercare before surgery.

Question 14

What is laser cataract surgery?

Accepted Answer

Laser cataract surgery uses a femtosecond laser to make corneal incisions, open the lens capsule, and soften the cataract before it is removed. A round, centered opening can help position a multifocal or toric intraocular lens, but ultrasound removal is still often used. It is not necessary or better for every eye. Amanat Eye Hospital can compare laser-assisted cataract surgery with standard phacoemulsification for your cataract.

Question 15

Are there drawbacks to laser cataract surgery?

Accepted Answer

Laser cataract surgery can cost more, and it is not suitable for every eye, including some eyes with a very small pupil or a cloudy cornea. For most people, skilled manual cataract surgery gives similar vision. The goal of either method is safe lens removal and a stable intraocular lens. A cataract surgeon at Amanat Eye Hospital can advise which method fits your eye.

Question 16

How long is recovery after cataract surgery?

Accepted Answer

Many people see more clearly within a few days, but healing often takes several weeks. Use the prescribed drops, do not rub the eye, and follow limits on heavy lifting and swimming. The second eye is often treated later. Amanat Eye Hospital schedules follow-up visits to check healing and your final glasses prescription.

Question 17

What is glaucoma?

Accepted Answer

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often related to intraocular pressure. The common open-angle type has no early symptoms and is found on testing. Untreated glaucoma can cause irreversible loss of side vision and, later, blindness. Glaucoma screening and treatment are available at Amanat Eye Hospital.

Question 18

What are the early signs of glaucoma?

Accepted Answer

Open-angle glaucoma usually has no early warning signs, so eye pressure, optic nerve, and visual field tests matter. Acute angle-closure glaucoma is different and can cause severe eye pain, headache, halos, nausea, and sudden blur. That form needs emergency care. Book a glaucoma evaluation at Amanat Eye Hospital if you are over 40 or have a family history.

Question 19

Can glaucoma be cured?

Accepted Answer

Glaucoma usually cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. Eye drops, laser, or surgery lower intraocular pressure so further optic nerve damage is slowed. Vision already lost generally does not return. Glaucoma specialists at Amanat Eye Hospital build a long-term plan to preserve the sight you still have.

Question 20

What is trabeculectomy?

Accepted Answer

Trabeculectomy is glaucoma filtration surgery that creates a new drainage path so fluid can leave the eye and eye pressure falls. It is considered when drops and laser are not enough. It can work well, but it needs close follow-up because infection, very low pressure, or scarring can occur. An ophthalmologist at Amanat Eye Hospital can explain if this surgery is appropriate.

Question 21

What is MIGS?

Accepted Answer

MIGS means minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. Tiny stents or openings improve fluid drainage, often during cataract surgery, with a faster recovery than trabeculectomy. It usually suits mild to moderate glaucoma and may lower pressure less than traditional filtering surgery. Amanat Eye Hospital can discuss whether MIGS, laser, drops, or trabeculectomy matches your glaucoma stage.

Question 22

What is age-related macular degeneration?

Accepted Answer

Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, affects the macula, the central retina used for reading and recognizing faces. It is more common after age 50. Central vision becomes blurred or distorted, while side vision often remains. A retina specialist at Amanat Eye Hospital can check the macula with a dilated exam and an OCT scan.

Question 23

What is the difference between dry and wet AMD?

Accepted Answer

Dry AMD is more common and usually worsens slowly as the macula thins and drusen form. Wet AMD is less common but more urgent, because abnormal blood vessels leak fluid or blood and can reduce central vision quickly. Wet AMD is treated with anti-VEGF injections. If straight lines look wavy, arrange a prompt retina visit at Amanat Eye Hospital.

Question 24

What are anti-VEGF injections?

Accepted Answer

Anti-VEGF injections are medicines placed inside the numbed eye to stop abnormal blood vessels leaking. They are standard treatment for wet AMD, diabetic macular edema, and some retinal vein occlusions. The injection itself takes minutes, and the schedule depends on OCT scans. A retina specialist at Amanat Eye Hospital decides the medicine and follow-up.

Question 25

What is diabetic retinopathy?

Accepted Answer

Diabetic retinopathy is damage to retinal blood vessels caused by diabetes. It can progress from small leaks to fragile new vessels, bleeding, and retinal detachment. Sight can be normal until the disease is advanced. People with diabetes need regular dilated retina exams at Amanat Eye Hospital even when vision feels fine.

Question 26

Can diabetic retinopathy cause blindness?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Advanced diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular swelling are leading causes of preventable vision loss in adults. Blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol control, plus timely laser, anti-VEGF injections, or vitrectomy, greatly reduce that risk. Do not wait for symptoms. Retina care for diabetic eye disease is available at Amanat Eye Hospital.

Question 27

What is panretinal laser photocoagulation?

Accepted Answer

Panretinal laser photocoagulation, or PRP, treats the peripheral retina in proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The laser helps shrink fragile new vessels and lowers the risk of bleeding and tractional retinal detachment. It can reduce side vision or night vision in some people, so it is used when that trade-off is worthwhile. A retina specialist at Amanat Eye Hospital confirms the stage before recommending laser.

Question 28

What is a vitrectomy?

Accepted Answer

Vitrectomy removes the vitreous gel from inside the eye. It is used for vitreous hemorrhage, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, and some diabetic retina complications. The gel is replaced with a clear fluid, gas, or silicone oil. Recovery depends on the reason for surgery. Retina surgeons at Amanat Eye Hospital can explain whether vitrectomy is needed.

Question 29

What are the warning signs of retinal detachment?

Accepted Answer

Warning signs are a sudden shower of floaters, flashes of light, a shadow or curtain in the side vision, or sudden vision loss. A retinal tear can cause the same symptoms before the retina detaches. This is an eye emergency. Contact Amanat Eye Hospital or emergency eye care the same day, not at the next routine visit.

Question 30

Is retinal detachment an emergency?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Delay can cause permanent vision loss, especially if the macula detaches. Treatment may include laser, a gas bubble, a scleral buckle, or vitrectomy. Earlier repair gives a better chance of saving sight. A curtain over your vision needs urgent care at Amanat Eye Hospital or the nearest emergency eye service.

Question 31

What do eye floaters and flashes mean?

Accepted Answer

Floaters are specks or cobwebs that drift across vision, often from normal aging of the vitreous gel. A few long-standing floaters are common, especially in myopia. A sudden increase, new flashes, or a shadow can mean a retinal tear or retinal detachment. Amanat Eye Hospital can dilate the eye and examine the retina the same day.

Question 32

What is myopia?

Accepted Answer

Myopia, or nearsightedness, means distant objects look blurred because light focuses in front of the retina. It often starts in school years and can increase through the teens. Glasses, contact lenses, and selected refractive surgery correct the focus. High myopia also needs retina checks. Amanat Eye Hospital assesses myopia in children and adults.

Question 33

Can myopia cause blindness?

Accepted Answer

Ordinary myopia does not cause blindness by itself. Very high myopia raises the risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic macular degeneration, which can threaten sight if missed. Regular dilated exams matter when the prescription is high. An ophthalmologist at Amanat Eye Hospital can monitor those risks.

Question 34

How can I slow myopia in my child?

Accepted Answer

More outdoor time and fewer long stretches of near work may help. After an exam, myopia-control glasses, special contact lenses, or low-dose atropine may be used to slow progression. Ordinary glasses correct blur but do not always slow the change. Pediatric eye care at Amanat Eye Hospital can recommend a plan for your child.

Question 35

What is hyperopia?

Accepted Answer

Hyperopia, or farsightedness, means light focuses behind the retina, often because the eye is shorter or the cornea is relatively flat. Children may see clearly by over-focusing, which can cause eyestrain, headaches, or a squint. Adults often notice near blur first. A refraction test at Amanat Eye Hospital shows whether glasses, contacts, or refractive surgery is suitable.

Question 36

What is astigmatism?

Accepted Answer

Astigmatism means the cornea or lens is unevenly curved, so light does not focus to one point. Vision looks blurred or shadowed at all distances, and it often occurs with myopia or hyperopia. Glasses, toric contact lenses, toric intraocular lenses, or laser vision correction can treat it. Amanat Eye Hospital measures the power and axis of the astigmatism.

Question 37

What is presbyopia?

Accepted Answer

Presbyopia is the age-related loss of near focus as the natural lens becomes less flexible, usually from the early to mid-40s. Reading and phone text become harder. It is a normal aging change, not the same as cataract, although cataract can appear later. Reading glasses, progressive lenses, or lens surgery can help. Ask Amanat Eye Hospital which option fits your work and your eyes.

Question 38

Why do I need reading glasses after 40?

Accepted Answer

After about 40, the lens cannot change shape well enough for near tasks. That change is presbyopia. Holding things farther away or needing brighter light is typical. A new glasses prescription is usually enough at first. If cataract is also present, or you want less dependence on reading glasses, discuss lens options at Amanat Eye Hospital.

Question 39

What is dry eye syndrome?

Accepted Answer

Dry eye syndrome means tears are too few, poor quality, or evaporate too fast. Burning, grittiness, watering, fluctuating blur, and light sensitivity are common. Screens, air conditioning, contact lenses, and some medicines can worsen it. Treatment may include artificial tears, lid care, and prescription drops after an exam. Dry eye evaluation is available at Amanat Eye Hospital.

Question 40

What is conjunctivitis?

Accepted Answer

Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is inflammation of the thin layer over the white of the eye and inner eyelids. It may be viral, bacterial, or allergic. Redness, discharge, watering, and irritation are typical. Itchy eyes suggest allergy, while sticky yellow-green discharge suggests bacteria. An eye doctor at Amanat Eye Hospital can tell these apart so the wrong drops are not used.

Question 41

Is conjunctivitis contagious?

Accepted Answer

Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis spread through hands, towels, and eye makeup. Allergic conjunctivitis does not. Wash your hands, do not share towels, and stop contact lenses until a clinician clears you. A newborn with red eyes, or anyone with severe pain, light sensitivity, or reduced vision, needs urgent care. Contact Amanat Eye Hospital if symptoms persist or sight changes.

Question 42

What is blepharitis?

Accepted Answer

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelid margins. Crusting, burning, redness, and a sandy feeling are common, and it often occurs with meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye. Warm compresses and gentle lid cleaning help many people, but persistent cases need medical care. Do not use steroid drops unless they are prescribed. Amanat Eye Hospital can check the lids and cornea.

Question 43

What is keratoconus?

Accepted Answer

Keratoconus is thinning and cone-shaped bulging of the cornea. It causes increasing blur, ghosting, and irregular astigmatism, often starting in the teens or twenties. Glasses may help early. Specialty contact lenses help later, and corneal cross-linking can slow progression if it is found in time. Corneal specialists at Amanat Eye Hospital map the cornea and advise treatment.

Question 44

Can eye rubbing worsen keratoconus?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Frequent hard eye rubbing is linked with keratoconus getting worse. Treat allergy so the eyes itch less, and do not rub them to try to clear vision. Home remedies cannot reshape the cornea. If keratoconus is suspected, Amanat Eye Hospital can arrange corneal topography, contact lens fitting, and advice on cross-linking.

Question 45

What is a corneal transplant?

Accepted Answer

A corneal transplant replaces scarred or swollen corneal tissue with healthy donor tissue. The surgeon may replace the full cornea or only the diseased layer. It is considered for advanced keratoconus, scars, or corneal swelling that glasses and contacts cannot correct. Healing and stitch care take months. Amanat Eye Hospital can assess whether a transplant, cross-linking, or specialty lenses is the better next step.

Question 46

What is strabismus?

Accepted Answer

Strabismus, or a squint, is misalignment of the eyes. One eye may turn in, out, up, or down. In children it can lead to amblyopia if the brain ignores the turned eye. Adults may see double. Treatment can include glasses, prisms, patching, or squint surgery. The pediatric and squint service at Amanat Eye Hospital evaluates children and adults.

Question 47

What is amblyopia?

Accepted Answer

Amblyopia, or lazy eye, is poor vision because the brain did not learn to use one eye properly in childhood. Causes include a squint, a large prescription difference, or something blocking the visual axis, such as a childhood cataract. Glasses plus patching or drops work best when started early. Pediatric ophthalmology at Amanat Eye Hospital supports early childhood eye screening.

Question 48

When should my child have an eye exam?

Accepted Answer

Arrange an eye exam if a child has a turned eye, sits very close to screens, tilts the head, squints, or struggles at school. A check before school is also wise, because amblyopia may cause no complaint. Early treatment protects visual development. Book pediatric eye care at Amanat Eye Hospital rather than relying only on a school screening.

Question 49

Am I a candidate for LASIK?

Accepted Answer

LASIK may suit adults with a stable prescription, enough corneal thickness, and no keratoconus or uncontrolled dry eye. It is not a good choice in pregnancy, with an unstable prescription, or with certain corneal or retinal diseases. Only scans and a full eye exam can confirm candidacy. Refractive surgeons at Amanat Eye Hospital screen for LASIK, PRK, and other options before recommending one.

Question 50

What is the difference between LASIK and PRK?

Accepted Answer

Both use an excimer laser to reshape the cornea and reduce dependence on glasses. LASIK makes a thin flap and usually recovers faster. PRK treats the corneal surface without a flap, so healing is slower and the eye is more uncomfortable at first, but it can suit some thinner corneas. Amanat Eye Hospital compares LASIK and PRK using your corneal thickness and lifestyle.

Question 51

What is EVO ICL?

Accepted Answer

EVO ICL is a collamer lens implanted inside the eye, in front of the natural lens, to correct myopia and some astigmatism. It does not remove corneal tissue, so it is considered for higher prescriptions or corneas that should not be lasered. Younger patients keep their natural lens and near focus. Suitability depends on anterior chamber depth and a healthy retina. The refractive team at Amanat Eye Hospital checks whether EVO ICL is appropriate.

Question 52

What is refractive lens exchange?

Accepted Answer

Refractive lens exchange, or RLE, replaces the clear natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens, using a technique similar to cataract surgery. It can correct high hyperopia, high myopia, or presbyopia when corneal laser is not suitable. Near focus is lost unless a multifocal or extended-depth lens is chosen. It is usually not the first choice for young adults who still focus well at near. A refractive surgeon at Amanat Eye Hospital can compare RLE with LASIK, PRK, and EVO ICL.

Question 53

Is RLE safer than LASIK?

Accepted Answer

Neither is safer for everyone. LASIK and PRK reshape the cornea and leave the natural lens in place. RLE enters the eye and has intraocular risks, including a higher retinal detachment risk in very nearsighted eyes. RLE can be the better choice when the cornea cannot be lasered safely, or when presbyopia or early cataract is the main issue. Amanat Eye Hospital decides from eye measurements, not from age alone.

Question 54

Which vision correction surgery is right for me?

Accepted Answer

The right choice depends on age, prescription, corneal shape and thickness, dry eye, eye pressure, retina health, and how much near focus you still need. LASIK or PRK suits many moderate prescriptions. EVO ICL suits selected higher myopia. RLE or cataract surgery suits lens aging and some high prescriptions. No online quiz replaces scans. Book a refractive consultation at Amanat Eye Hospital.

Question 57

Accepted Answer

Question 58

Accepted Answer

Question 59

Accepted Answer

Question 60

Accepted Answer

Question 61

Accepted Answer

Question 62

Accepted Answer

Question 63

Accepted Answer

Question 64

Accepted Answer
